The right to the truth is a fundamental human right, especially in cases of gross human rights violations and serious breaches of humanitarian law. Families of victims of summary executions, enforced disappearances, torture, and abductions have the right to know the full truth about the circumstances surrounding these crimes, including the people responsible and the reasons behind them. This day on March 24honors Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero, who was assassinated on March 24, 1980, for speaking against human rights violations in El Salvador.

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is observed annually on March 24 to raise awareness about tuberculosis, one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally. TB causes severe health, social, and economic consequences, making it a major public health concern. The theme for World TB Day 2025 is “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver”, emphasizing the need for stronger commitment, increased investment, and effective delivery of TB elimination strategies.

Shaheed Diwas, also known as Martyrs’ Day, is observed every year on March 23 to honor the sacrifices of India’s great revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar. These young freedom fighters were executed by the British colonial government on March 23, 1931, for their role in the freedom movement. As India observes Shaheed Diwas 2025, the nation remembers their heroic contributions and revolutionary thoughts, which continue to inspire generations.

Eminent Hindi writer Vinod Kumar Shukla has been named the recipient of the 59th Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honour. At 88 years old, he is recognized for his outstanding contribution to Hindi literature, with a unique writing style that blends linguistic creativity and emotional depth. Notably, he is the first author from Chhattisgarh to receive this prestigious award and the 12th Hindi writer to be honored with it.

Veteran sculptor Ram Sutar the maker of the Statue of Unity, will be honoured by Maharashtra Bhushan 2024, the state’s highest civilian award. Ram Sutar is a Padma Bhushan awardee and designed the Statue of Unity which is the world’s tallest statue with a height of 182 metres. The award comprises 25 lakh rupees and a memento. Sutar is a centenarian but is still working on the Ambedkar statue at the Indu Mill Memorial project in Mumbai.

India will host the 11th Asian Swimming Championship at the Naranpura Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The Swimming Federation of India announced that it has received in-principle approval from both the Gujarat government and Asia Aquatics to organize the championship. The event will take place from October 1 to 15. The championship will feature swimming, diving, artistic swimming, and water polo.

Justice Harish Tandon has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. His appointment comes after the retirement of Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh on January 19, 2024. Until now, Justice Arindam Sinha had been serving as the acting Chief Justice.

Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry has been elected as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). She has become the first female President in IOC history. The 41-year-old Zimbabwean was elected at the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece. Coventry will succeed the ninth IOC President, Thomas Bach, whose 12-year tenure will officially end after June 23.
