World Civil Defence Day, observed annually on March 1st, aims to raise awareness about civil protection, disaster preparedness, and emergency response. Established by the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO), this day highlights the crucial role of civil defence organizations in safeguarding communities against natural and man-made disasters.

Zero Discrimination Day, observed annually on March 1, promotes the right of every individual to live with dignity and equality, free from discrimination. Initiated by UNAIDS in 2014, this day highlights the importance of inclusion, compassion, and peace while addressing various forms of discrimination, particularly against marginalized communities. The 2025 theme is We Stand Together and it underscores the role of community-led initiatives in sustaining the HIV response and global health efforts.

World Seagrass Day is celebrated annually on March 1 to highlight the ecological importance of seagrass and promote conservation efforts. Seagrass plays a vital role in maintaining the marine ecosystem, supporting marine biodiversity, stabilizing coastlines, and acting as a major carbon sink. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially declared this observance on May 22, 2022, following a resolution proposed by Sri Lanka to emphasize the urgent need for seagrass conservation.

National Science Day is observed every year on 28 February to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by physicist CV Raman in 1928. Since 1986, this day has been celebrated across India to recognise scientific achievements and encourage scientific awareness among students and the public. The theme for National Science Day 2025 is ‘Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat’. The first celebration took place on February 28, 1987, marking the beginning of a tradition that continues to inspire generations.

NASA is set to launch its SPHEREx telescope, aiming to create the most detailed and colorful map of the universe ever made. The telescope will use infrared spectroscopy to analyze light in 96 bands, far beyond human vision. This will help scientists understand the formation of the universe, galaxy evolution, and the distribution of life-forming molecules. Unlike the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which focuses on high-resolution observations of small regions, SPHEREx will map the entire sky in just a few months.

The Indian Navy in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the flight test of the indigenously developed Naval Anti-Ship Missile -Short Range (NASM-SR). The missile was launched from the Indian Navy’s Sea King MK 42B helicopter from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur in Odisha.
