World Tuberculosis Day 2024
World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is an annual observation celebrated on March 24th. In 2024, it falls on Sunday, March 24th. Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs. It is caused by a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB bacteria can spread through the air when infected people cough, sneeze, or spit. TB is preventable and treatable with a combination of antibacterial medications for 6 to 12 months. However, if not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal.

The theme for World TB Day 2024 is “Yes! We can end TB“. This theme highlights the continued efforts and awareness campaigns aimed at eradicating this deadly disease.
International Day for the Right to the Truth 2024
Every year, on March 24, the International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed. This annual observance honours the memory of victims of severe human rights violations and promotes the importance of the right to truth and justice. The right to the truth is an important concept in cases of gross human rights violations. The relatives of victims have the right to know what happened to their loved ones who were subjected to summary executions, enforced disappearances, abductions, torture, and other atrocities. The right to the truth means knowing the full and complete truth about the events that occurred, the specific circumstances, and who was involved. It also includes understanding the reasons and circumstances behind the violations.

‘Phool Bahadur’ – The First Magahi Novel in English
The Dibrugarh University International Literary Festival held on 19-21 March 2024 witnessed the launch of a remarkable literary work – the English translation of the first Magahi novel, ‘Phool Bahadur’. The translation was done by Abhay K, a renowned writer from Nalanda, Bihar. ‘Phool Bahadur’ was originally written by Jayanath Pati and published in 1928. Despite being the first Magahi novel, it failed to gain much popularity among readers initially. However, it has now been rediscovered and is gaining fame thanks to Abhay K’s English translation. The translator stumbled upon this literary gem while editing ‘The Book of Bihari Literature’.

Bina Agarwal and James Boyce have been awarded the first “Global Inequality Research Award” for their significant contributions to understanding global inequalities, specifically in the areas of social and environmental inequalities. The laureates will be invited to receive their awards and present an overview of their work at conferences in Paris in the fall and spring of 2024. These conferences will be organized in conjunction with Sciences Po’s Social-Ecological Transitions (SET) initiative.

Govind Dholakia Appointed New Chairman of Surat Diamond Bourse
The Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) has appointed Govind Dholakia, a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, as its new chairman. This appointment comes a day after the previous chairman, Vallabhbhai Patel (Lakhani), resigned from his position. On Thursday, the SDB core committee members held a meeting to discuss the next steps following Lakhani’s resignation. After considering various diamond merchants, the committee unanimously decided to nominate Dholakia, the owner of SRK Diamonds and a member of the SDB advisory committee, as the new chairman.

Researchers Named after ISRO New species of Isopod Discovered in Kollam
Researchers have made an exciting discovery off the coast of Kollam in Kerala. They have found a new species of deep-sea isopod, which is a tiny crustacean that feeds on fish. This new species belongs to the genus Brucethoa and was found living inside the gill cavity of a fish called the Spinyjaw greeneye.
