Each year, over 720,000 people die by suicide globally, leaving behind immense emotional, social, and economic consequences. In response to this ongoing crisis, World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is observed on 10 September, uniting global efforts under the conviction that suicides are preventable. The 2024–2026 triennial theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” encourages a collective shift from silence and stigma to openness, empathy, and proactive support.

Abhimanyu Mishra, a 16-year-old chess prodigy from the United States, has taken the global chess community by storm. Already celebrated as the youngest Grandmaster in history, he recently etched his name in the record books again by defeating reigning World Champion D Gukesh at the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025. This victory not only showcases his immense talent but also highlights his extraordinary journey, marked by early achievements and relentless dedication.

India clinched their 4th Asia Cup men’s hockey title after defeating South Korea 4-1 in the final at Rajgir, Bihar, securing a spot in the 2026 Hockey World Cup. Goals for India came from Sukhjeet Singh (1’), Dilpreet Singh (28’, 45’), and Amit Rohidas (50’), while Dain Son (51’) scored the only goal for South Korea. India remained unbeaten in the tournament, winning five matches and drawing one, including big Super 4 victories against Malaysia (4-1) and China (7-0).

A contingent of the Indian Armed Forces has departed for Russia to participate in the multilateral military exercise ZAPAD 2025, scheduled to be held from September 10 to 16 at the Mulino Training Ground in Nizhniy. The exercise underscores India’s commitment to deepening military cooperation and enhancing strategic interoperability with global partners.

Indian filmmaker Anupama Roy won the Best Director award in the Orizzonti section at the 82nd Venice Film Festival for her film Songs of Forgotten Trees, which tells the story of two migrant women in Mumbai. The award was announced by Julia Ducournau, president of the Orizzonti jury. Vetern U.S. director Jim Jarmusch won festival’s top honor, the Golden Lion for Best Film, for his movie Father Mother Sister Brother. The film explores family dynamics and generational tension, with scenes set in New Jersey, Dublin, and Paris.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Teachers Award 2025 to Shri Karma Tempo Ethenpa, Principal of PM SHRI Govt. Sr. Secondary School, Mangan, Sikkim, in New Delhi. Shri Ethenpa was among 66 teachers nationwide (45 school teachers and 21 from higher education) selected for this prestigious award. The award recognizes his dedication to education and tireless efforts to inspire and empower students.

On September 9, 2025, CP Radhakrishnan, the former Tamil Nadu BJP president and Maharashtra Governor, was elected as the 15th Vice President of India, defeating opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy, a senior advocate and former Supreme Court judge. The election witnessed a high turnout of 98.3%, showcasing the unity and participation of parliamentarians. Radhakrishnan secured 452 first preference votes, while Justice Reddy received 300 votes. Fifteen votes were declared invalid.
