The International Day of Deafblindness is observed globally on June 27 every year to recognize and advocate for the rights of individuals living with deafblindness—a unique and severe combination of hearing and visual impairments. This day brings much-needed attention to the distinct challenges faced by deafblind individuals and promotes the inclusion, support, and visibility of this often-overlooked community in global policies and development agendas.

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is observed annually on 26 June, marking the day in 1987 when the UN Convention Against Torture came into effect. The day reaffirms that torture is a crime under international law and is absolutely prohibited under all circumstances, including war, threat of terrorism, or political instability.

The spiritually rich and culturally vibrant Kataragama Esala Festival commenced in Sri Lanka on June 26, 2025, with a flag hoisting ceremony, marking the beginning of one of the country’s most revered multi-faith celebrations. Drawing thousands of devotees and pilgrims—including those who undertook the arduous Pada Yatra on foot—this annual festival is not only a religious observance but also a powerful symbol of unity among Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims.

The vibrant and historic Bonalu festival commenced in spectacular fashion at the Golconda Fort in Hyderabad, marking the beginning of a month-long celebration steeped in Telangana’s folk traditions. Devotees thronged the Sri Jagadamba Mahankali temple, where rituals and offerings, including the first Bonam, were performed with traditional fervour. Women in bright attire, rhythmic dances by Potharajus, and fire performances highlighted the spiritual and cultural grandeur of this annual celebration.

The Ambubachi Mela, an annual spiritual festival held at the Kamakhya Temple in Assam, marks the ritualistic menstrual cycle of Goddess Kamakhya. Observed for four days in June, the temple gates are closed as a sign of the goddess undergoing her period, symbolizing fertility and womanhood. The festival attracts lakhs of devotees and is seen not only as a religious event but also as a significant platform to promote menstrual hygiene and break related taboos in society.

In a significant leadership transition, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has announced Zou Jiayi, former Vice Finance Minister of China, as its next President. She will take over from the founding President, Jin Liqun, whose second five-year term ends in January 2026. The announcement was made during the 10th Annual Meeting of the AIIB Board of Governors, marking a new chapter for the Beijing-headquartered multilateral bank.

In a significant stride towards biodiversity conservation, Kerala has become home to India’s first butterfly sanctuary. The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary in Kannur district has officially been renamed the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary, marking a first-of-its-kind move in the country. Spanning 55 sq. km in the lush Western Ghats, the sanctuary now serves as a dedicated refuge for over 266 butterfly species, including several rare and endangered ones.
