World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5. It is the United Nations’ flagship initiative to raise global awareness and drive action on the most pressing environmental issues. Since its inception in 1972, it has evolved into a powerful global platform, engaging more than 150 countries annually. Launched during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, the first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973. The theme for World Environment Day 2025 is “Beat Plastic Pollution.” This theme underscores the urgent need to address the growing plastic crisis that threatens ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.

India delivered a stellar performance at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025, held in Gumi, Republic of Korea, from May 27 to 31, clinching 24 medals in total – 8 gold, 10 silver, and 6 bronze – to secure the second position in the overall medal standings, behind China. Over 60 Indian athletes competed across 30 events, showcasing depth, talent, and national dominance in middle-distance running, relays, and hurdles.

In the 4th Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament, Deepak and Naman Tanwar spearheaded India’s campaign, securing two golds as part of an impressive eight-medal haul. Deepak clinched the gold with a 5:0 win over Abdurakhimov Javokhir of Uzbekistan in the 75 kg final, while Naman got the better of China’s Han Xuezhen 4:1 in the 90 kg category.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, has been conferred with the Global Leadership Award by the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) at its 8th annual Leadership Summit held in Washington, D.C. Recognised for his leadership and commitment to strengthening U.S.-India economic ties, Mr. Birla was awarded alongside Arvind Krishna (IBM) and Toshiaki Higashihara (Hitachi). 

In a landmark decision aimed at supporting the reintegration of military-trained youth into civil services, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on June 3, 2025, approved a proposal granting 20% horizontal reservation to former Agniveers in direct recruitment for posts in the Uttar Pradesh Police, including roles such as Constable, PAC, Mounted Constable, and Fireman. This policy ensures meaningful post-service employment opportunities for those who complete their four-year tenure under the Agneepath scheme, reinforcing the government’s commitment to honour their service and harness their disciplined skillset for state security.

In a significant boost to India’s environmental conservation efforts, two wetlands from Rajasthan—Khichan in Phalodi and Menar in Udaipur—have been added to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, taking India’s total tally to 91 Ramsar Sites. The announcement, made on the eve of World Environment Day 2025, underscores the country’s commitment to protecting vital ecosystems and aligns with global sustainability goals.

Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, unveiled a new series of banknotes that no longer bear the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding father. Instead, the redesigned Taka notes feature natural landscapes, archaeological sites, and traditional landmarks, including depictions of Hindu and Buddhist temples. The move marks a significant symbolic shift aimed at depoliticising national symbols amid growing political unrest in the country.
