The 11th edition of Indian Coast Guard’s National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise and Workshop (SAREX-24) begins in Kochi, Kerala. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh has inaugurated the event. The exercise is being held alongside the 22nd National Maritime Search and Rescue Board meeting.

India has achieved a significant milestone by successfully testing the K-4 nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a range of 3,500 km from the nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat in the Bay of Bengal. This test strengthens India’s nuclear deterrence and places the nation among the select few capable of launching nuclear missiles from land, air, and sea.

The India International Science Festival (IISF) 2024, India’s largest science celebration, will take place at IIT Guwahati, Assam, from November 30 to December 3, 2024. The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, likely to intensify into Cyclone Fengal, is set to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on November 30, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. ISRO and IMD are actively monitoring the system, with ISRO satellites EOS-06 and INSAT-3DR providing real-time updates. IMD issued an orange alert for Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore, and a yellow alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, and other districts. Heavy rains in the Cauvery delta region have already caused significant crop damage.

The renaming of Sarai Kale Khan Chowk to Bhagwan Birsa Munda Chowk has sparked controversy between the Delhi government and the Union government. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a statue of the tribal icon, Bhagwan Birsa Munda, on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary and announced the renaming. However, the Delhi government questioned the legitimacy of this move, citing the lack of an active State Naming Authority and the absence of due process for renaming locations.

Australia is set to implement a significant move by banning social media access for children under 16, starting in November. This proposed ban targets platforms like Instagram and Facebook, which have been linked to various issues such as body image concerns, cyberbullying, and mental health challenges among the youth. While this ban doesn’t block internet access, it aims to mitigate the harmful impact these platforms have on young minds.

The world’s first high-altitude para sports centre will be established in Leh, Ladakh, aiming to advance the skills and confidence of athletes ahead of the 2028 Paralympics. A Memorandum and Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, and the Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF).
