The United Nations observes the International Day for the Prevention of Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict each year on November 6 to raise awareness and encourage global efforts to protect the environment in times of conflict. This day sheds light on the often-overlooked environmental impacts of armed conflict and underscores the importance of environmental protection as part of peacebuilding efforts.

Scientists in Japan are set to test the world’s first wooden satellite “LignoSat”. The LignoSat was developed by a team from Kyoto University and homebuilder Sumitomo Forestry. It will be launched next week atop a SpaceX rocket, bound for the International Space Station. LignoSat – named after the Latin word for wood – will be released from the space station in the coming weeks. It will orbit for six months, testing how well the material can withstand the extreme environment.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has started the country’s first analog space mission at Leh in Ladakh, where space agency will simulate life in an interplanetary habitat. The move assumes significance as India is planning to send a human to the Moon in the near future.

The word, redefined by British singer Charli XCX and popularized through her album of the same name, has come to represent a “confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.” Originally used to describe a misbehaving child, “brat” now embodies a culturally resonant spirit of self-expression and rebellion that resonates globally, with notable support from US presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

The governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to extend the validity of the Agreement on Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for five years until 24 October 2029. The initial agreement was to lapse on 24 October 2024. The agreement between the two countries comes in the background of the Minister for External Affairs, Dr S Jaishnakar’s visit to Pakistan for the 23rd Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisations (SCO) Council of Heads of Government, held in Islamabad on 15 & 16 October 2024.
