4 July – Jackfruit Day
Jackfruit Day is celebrated on 4 July every year. The tropical fruit is a popular meat substitute for those who are trying to follow a plant-based diet. It is high in vitamins and antioxidants, making it a great addition to any diet. The fruit has a spiky outer skin and is native to parts of South and South-East Asia. It is mostly produced in Asia, but attempts were made to grow it in Hawaii before 1888. The word “jackfruit” is thought to have been derived from the Portuguese “jaca,” which can also be translated to “chakka.”

The US celebrates Independence Day on July 4 every year, which is a national holiday commemorating the country’s declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776. Russia approves schedule for creation of Russian Orbital Station by 2033
Russia has approved the schedule for the creation of a Russian orbital station by 2033. The scientific and energy modules will be launched first in 2027, and three other core modules, namely the universal nodal, gateway, and base modules, will be launched by 2030. and two other target modules are scheduled to be launched by 2033.

RBI Appoints Charulatha S Kar as Executive Director
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Smt. Charulatha S Kar as Executive Director (ED), effective from July 1, 2024. Previously serving as Chief General Manager-in-Charge in the Human Resource Management Department, she brings over three decades of experience in various roles including Payment and Settlement Systems, Information Technology, and Government Banking. Smt. Kar has represented the RBI in several international forums and committees.
Justice Sheel Nagu Appointed Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court
Justice Sheel Nagu has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, following a notification by the Centre on Thursday. Previously, Justice Nagu served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court after Chief Justice Ravi Malimath demitted office on May 24, 2024. His appointment comes after a Supreme Court Collegium recommendation and fills the position left vacant since Chief Justice RS Jha’s retirement on October 13, 2023. Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva has now been appointed as the new Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Sujata Saunik Appointed Maharashtra’s First Woman Chief Secretary
Sujata Saunik, an IAS officer of the 1987 batch, became the first woman chief secretary of Maharashtra on July 1, breaking a 64-year-old pattern. Saunik assumed office from her predecessor Nitin Kareer in the chief secretary’s office on the sixth floor of Mantralaya. She is set to retire in June next year.
