International Day of the Seafarer 2024
Every year on June 25th, we celebrate the International Day of the Seafarer. This special day was created by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010 to recognize the important role seafarers play in our daily lives and the global economy. The Day of the Seafarer is a chance to say “thank you” to these hard-working individuals. We recognize their contributions to the world economy and society, as well as the risks and personal sacrifices they make in their jobs.

Indian Archers Triumph at Archery World Cup 2024 Stage 3
The Archery World Cup 2024 Stage 3 in Antalya, Turkey concluded on June 23, 2024, with Indian archers showcasing their exceptional skills and bringing home multiple medals. This prestigious event, organized by World Archery from June 18-23, 2024, saw India’s team finish with an impressive tally of four medals – one gold, one silver, and two bronze. 22-year-old Dhiraj Bommadevara emerged as a star performer for India, securing two bronze medals in recurve events.

Indian Army Opened Khalubar War Memorial To Tourists in Ladakh
In Ladakh, as a tribute to the heroes of the Kargil War, the Indian Army has opened the Khalubar War Memorial to tourists. This opening ceremony was part of the ‘Forever in Operations’ Division’s Pre-Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations as this year, the country will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26 July. Located in the renowned Aryan Valley this memorial commemorates the bravery and sacrifices of soldiers who fought to reclaim the valley during the war.

Sony Pictures Networks India Appoints Gaurav Banerjee As New MD & CEO
Sony Pictures Networks India on June 24 announced the appointment of former Disney executive Gaurav Banerjee as its Managing Director and CEO, effective on or before August 26, pending regulatory approvals. Mr. Banerjee will succeed N. P. Singh, who will move into the role of Non-Executive Chairman after a 25-year tenure.
Anuj Tyagi Appointed MD and CEO of HDFC ERGO General Insurance
Private sector general insurer HDFC ERGO General Insurance announced the appointment of Anuj Tyagi as its new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective July 1, 2024. Tyagi, who has been with the company since 2008 and currently serves as Deputy MD, will succeed Ritesh Kumar, the MD & CEO since 2008. This leadership transition has received all necessary regulatory approvals.
Bhartruhari Mahtab appointed Pro-tem speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha
President Droupadi Murmu has appointed seven-time Lok Sabha member of parliament Bhartruhari Mahtab of Bharatiya Janata Party as the pro-tem speaker of the newly constituted 18th Lok Sabha. Along with him, Suresh Kodikunnil, Thalikkottai Rajuthevar Baalu, Radha Mohan Singh, Faggan Singh Kulaste, and Sudip Bandyopadhyay were appointed to assist the pro-tem Speaker in the oath-taking of the newly elected members. The first session of the newly constituted 18th Lok Sabha starts on 24 June 20224. Normally, the senior-most newly elected member of the Lok Sabha is appointed as pro-tem speaker. This is a convention, not a rule.

India Ranks 129th on Global Gender Gap Index
India is ranked 129th out of 146 countries in the 2024 Global Gender Gap Index. This is the same spot it has held in the bottom 20 for the past few years. This shows that fixing the gender gap has been hard for a long time in many areas, even though there has been some progress in some areas. Iceland retained its top position in the rankings list.
Kerala’s Kozhikode – India’s first UNESCO ‘City of Literature’
The UNESCO honored Kozhikode as India’s first “City of Literature” on June 23. According to this status, the city’s cultural history should be celebrated and used to help develop literary ability. The Mayor of Kozhikode and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration took the lead in getting the city this title. Their thorough research and well-organized presentation brought out Kozhikode’s important contributions to many cultural areas, making Kolkata’s literary practices look weak in comparison.
