On June 17th, the world celebrates the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. This important day aims to raise awareness about the pressing issue of land degradation and its devastating effects on the environment and communities around the globe.

This year’s theme, “United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future,” emphasizes the critical importance of land stewardship as a shared responsibility for all. It highlights the urgency of preserving our land resources for future generations and ensuring the stability and prosperity of billions of people worldwide.

Every year on June 16th, we observe the International Day of Family Remittances, a day dedicated to recognizing the significant contributions of over 200 million migrants who send money back home to support their families. These family remittances are small amounts of money that, when combined, total three times more than official development assistance provided by countries.

The Theme for 2024: “Digital Remittances Towards Financial Inclusion and Cost Reduction”

The theme for the 2023-2024 #FamilyRemittances campaign is “Digital remittances towards financial inclusion and cost reduction.” This theme highlights the positive impact of digitalization in reducing the costs associated with sending money home, improving access to financial services, and promoting financial inclusion for migrants and their families.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) organized the ‘Global Wind Day’ on June 15, 2024, in Delhi to commemorate the achievements and potential of wind energy in India. The event highlighted India’s progress in the wind energy sector and discussed strategies for accelerating its adoption across the country.

Theme 2024: “Pawan-Urja: Powering the Future of India”

The winners of the 2024 Kavli Prize were announced on June 12. Eight winners were awarded for their contributions to astrophysics, neuroscience, and nanoscience.

This year’s prize for astrophysics has been awarded to David Charbonneau of Harvard University, and Sara Seager, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Robert Langer of MIT, Armand Paul Alivisatos of the University of Chicago, and Chad Mirkin of Northwestern University were given the prize for nanoscience.

The prize in neuroscience has been awarded to Nancy Kanwisher of MIT, Winrich Freiwald of Rockefeller University, and Doris Tsao of the University of California at Berkeley.

Kerala’s Kozhikode is all set to host the Malabar River Festival 2024, featuring the International White Water Kayaking Championship from July 25 to 28. This exciting event aims to promote white-water kayaking in the region and will be held in Thusaharagiri, Chalipuzha, and Iruvazhinjipuzha. The high-octane events and pre-events will host over 100 national-level kayakers from India and kayaking professionals from over 20 countries.

Egypt and Bahrain have joined China as international partners to develop and deliver scientific instruments for the Chang’e-7 mission. The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA), Bahrain’s National Space Science Agency, and the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics, and Physics signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop a hyperspectral camera as part of the goal of developing and delivering scientific instruments for the Chang’e-7 mission. The Chinese lunar mission aimed at searching for water ice at the moon’s South Pole in 2026.

Tesam Pongte was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 8th Arunachal Pradesh Assembly on June 15. Pro-tem Speaker Ninong Ering announced that Pongte was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Assembly. Tesam Pongte is an Indian politician of the BJP in Arunachal Pradesh. Pongte, 49, who represents the Changlang North assembly constituency, was the deputy speaker in the previous assembly. Pongte is an arts graduate from Rangfrah Govt College in Changlang. He hails from Laktong in Changlang district.

In a ceremony marked by heightened security following an assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico, Peter Pellegrini has been inaugurated as Slovakia’s sixth president. His victory in the runoff election solidified Fico’s influence, maintaining control over strategic positions in the government. Pellegrini, known for his advocacy of a strong state role, previously served as Parliament’s speaker and aligned closely with Fico’s policies.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav launched an intra-State air service to promote tourism on June 13 from Raja Bhoj International Airport in the state capital Bhopal. It is called ‘PM Shri Paryatan Vayu Seva’ and the first flight was flagged off from the capital Bhopal to Jabalpur. The service operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) with two aircraft will connect eight cities across the State- Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Khajuraho, Ujjain, Rewa, and Singrauli.
