Every year on December 11, we celebrate International Mountain Day to remind ourselves of the incredible importance of mountains in our lives. This special day, designated by the United Nations, encourages us to think about how we can protect these natural wonders and ensure a better future for our planet.

International Mountain Day Theme for 2023

This year, the theme is “Restoring Mountain Ecosystems.” What does that mean? It’s all about understanding that mountains face challenges, especially due to climate change. These challenges can affect the plants, animals, and communities living in the mountains. So, on this day, we are reminded to find ways to bring back balance to these ecosystems.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan has inaugurated the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Avionics Expo 2023 in New Delhi. Chauhan said the aviation sector needs to keep up with a rapidly changing world and new technological innovations. He added that military affairs are headed to convergence warfare where different technologies converge to make battles more automated and autonomous. CDS Chauhan also stressed on the need for Aatma-Nirbharta in the aviation sector to reduce import dependency, boost the economy, and better handle geo-political and economic instabilities.

As part of its ongoing long-range deployment to Africa, the Indian Naval Ship Sumedha made a historic arrival at Port Lamu, Kenya on 09 December 2023. This visit is significant as it marks the first port call by any Indian Naval Ship at the recently developed port in Kenya, showcasing the growing maritime collaboration between India and Kenya.

In a significant step towards fostering gender inclusivity and strengthening the capabilities of women military personnel in peacekeeping operations, the Indian Army recently conducted a table-top exercise (TTX) for women officers from the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN). This exercise, held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi from December 4 to 8, is part of the ongoing joint military training initiatives between India and ASEAN member states.

In a strategic move ahead of the 2024 general elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has selected Vishnu Deo Sai, a tribal leader and former Union Minister, as its candidate for the Chief Minister’s position in Chhattisgarh. This decision was formalized during a meeting of the 54 newly-elected MLAs, where Vishnu Deo Sai was elected as the leader of the BJP’s legislature party.

Veteran politician and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhoma sworn in as the Chief Minister of Mizoram at Raj Bhawan in Aizawl. Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati administered the oath to Mr Lalduhoma. The 74-year-old Lalduhoma joined politics in 1984 when he was elected as Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) on Congress ticket. He has walked the political corridor for almost 40 years before assuming the Chief Ministership. In this year’s elections, he led the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) to a decisive victory bagging as many as 27 seats in the 40-member House. The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) was reduced to 10 seats while the BJP got 2 seats.

In a surprising move, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy appointed Damodar Rajanarasimha Cilarapu, an engineering graduate, as the Health Minister of the state. This decision has sparked discussions and debates, given the traditional expectation of having a medical professional in charge of the health portfolio. Damodar Rajanarasimha, a seasoned politician affiliated with the Indian National Congress (INC), began his political career in 1989. He secured a seat as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Andole constituency. Despite initial setbacks, he demonstrated resilience and won elections in 2004 and 2009.

United Arab Emirates’ Mohammed Al Ramsi has been appointed Chairman of the World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 (WRC 23). The event is being held in Dubai, UAE, from November 20th to December 15th, 2023. WRC is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) every four years to revise the global use of radio-frequency spectrum, geostationary-satellite, and non-geostationary-satellite orbits. This year, more than 4,000 government officials and 900 international organizations from 193 countries are attending the conference.

Indian social activist Nikhil Dey has been honored as an International Anti-Corruption Champion by the US government for 2023. This recognition highlights his decades-long commitment to empowering peasants and workers while exposing corruption in the delivery of government services. Dey is the co-founder of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS), a Rajasthan-based organization at the forefront of transparency and anti-corruption movements in India.

Currently serving as the incoming Support Chair of GPAI, India is set to take on the Lead Chair position for GPAI in 2024. To showcase its commitment to the advancement of AI, India is hosting the Annual GPAI Summit from December 12 – 14, 2023. The event is anticipated to be inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on December 12, 2023.

The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated the first Indian Art, Architecture & Design Biennale (IAADB) 2023 at the iconic Red Fort. The event also marked the launch of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design’ and the student Biennale, Samunnati. During the inaugural ceremony, Shri Modi unveiled the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design‘ and explored the exhibition, emphasizing the Red Fort’s historical importance. The establishment of cultural spaces in five major cities namely Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Varanasi was highlighted as a historic step to enrich these cities culturally.

In a major leap towards sustainable practices, India has clinched the 7th position in the latest edition of the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI). The announcement, made during the COP-28 in Dubai, solidifies India’s status as a top performer for the fifth consecutive year. India’s exceptional ascent is primarily attributed to its outstanding performance in renewable energy, surpassing other developing nations. This achievement is particularly notable, considering the comparative evaluation within the same timeframe.
