National Statistics Day 2023
National Statistics Day is commemorated annually on June 29 to honor the significant contributions made by Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics and economic planning. Often hailed as the ‘father of Indian statistics,’ Professor Mahalanobis is renowned for developing the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure utilized to determine the disparity between a point and a distribution. This event is taking place at the Scope Convention Centre, Scope Complex, Lodhi Road in New Delhi. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Pt P. D. Baul awarded 1st Kala Kranti Lifetime Achievement Award
At the Kolkata edition of the International Performing Arts Festival (IPAF), Padma Shri Pandit Purna Das Baul was presented with the IPAF Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the traditional Baul music on the world stage. The award was presented to him by Governor Dr. Bose at the prestigious Indian Museum’s Ashutosh Birth Centenary Hall. This is IPAF’s 5th year in Kolkata with 2 days of cultural programs to support the dying Indian art forms and different artists from Kolkata participated in it along with artists from other states as well.
India ranked 67th on Energy Transition Index, Sweden on top: WEF
India has secured the 67th position in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) energy transition index, making it the only major economy to witness an acceleration across all dimensions. The report, developed in collaboration with Accenture, highlights India’s significant improvements in achieving a secure and sustainable energy transition, reducing energy and carbon intensity, increasing renewable energy deployment and attaining universal access to electricity.
UN chief appoints Xu of China as deputy head of UNDP
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has announced the appointment of Haoliang Xu of China as Under-Secretary-General and Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Mr. Xu will succeed Usha Rao-Monari of India, to whom the Secretary-General has expressed his appreciation for her service and commitment during her tenure as Associate Administrator.
