International Day of Plant Health 2023 celebrates on 12th May

The United Nations designated 12 May the International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect biodiversity and the environment, and boost economic development. Plants are essential for life on Earth. They provide us with food, oxygen, and shelter. They also play a vital role in the environment, helping to regulate the climate and prevent soil erosion. However, plants are also vulnerable to pests and diseases.  

International Day of Plant Health 2023- Theme

The theme of this year’s celebration of International Day of Plant Health is “Plant Health for Environmental Protection,” as mentioned on the IPPC website. The IPPC is a 1951 multilateral treaty overseen by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) which formulates action plans to prevent and control the introduction and spread of pests of plants and plant products.

International Nurses Day 2023 Observed on 12th May

International Nurses Day is observed on the 12th of May every year to commemorate the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who was born on May 12, 1820. Nightingale was a British nurse, statistician, and social reformer who lay the foundation for what we see as modern nursing – a structured, methodical process of nursing the sick back to health. International Nurses Day is a Global celebration that acknowledges and celebrates the commitment and bravery of nurses around the world.

NIIF appoints Rajiv Dhar as CEO & MD on interim basis

National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIFL) has appointed Rajiv Dhar, Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer as the Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of NIIFL on an interim basis, effective May 11, 2023. The planned succession follows Sujoy Bose’s request to relieve him from his current responsibilities as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, a position he held since 2016 in the company. NIIFL manages over $4.3 billion of equity capital commitments across its three funds – Master Fund, Fund of Funds, and Strategic Opportunities Fund. NIIF Fund of Funds (FoF) is focused on building a portfolio of private equity funds across diversified sectors and investment strategies.

Puma appoints Karthik Balagopalan as new MD for India

Sportswear retailer Puma has appointed Karthik Balagopalan as the new Managing Director of PUMA India. He earlier served as Global Director Retail and e-commerce at the company. He will succeed Abhishek Ganguly, who worked for PUMA’s Indian business for 17 years and has been the Managing Director of PUMA India since 2014. Ganguly is set to pursue a career as an entrepreneur in his own venture. Balagopalan will report to Puma CEO Arne Freundt and will be based in Bengaluru.

Cyclone Mocha: All About The Storm

Cyclone Mocha was a very severe cyclonic storm that formed in the Bay of Bengal on May 10, 2023. The storm intensified rapidly, reaching peak winds of 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour) before making landfall in Bangladesh on May 14. The storm caused widespread damage in Bangladesh and Myanmar, killing at least 100 people and displacing millions more. Cyclone Mocha was named on the basis of a suggestion made by Yemen.

Varanasi’s LBSI airport gets India’s first reading lounge

The Lal Bahadur Shastri International (LBSI) Airport here has become the first in India to have a reading lounge. Apart from books on Kashi, the lounge`s library has a collection of literature and books in many international languages besides books of youth authors published under Prime Minister Yuva Yojana. The Varanasi airport has become the first airport in the country to have a free reading lounge. The lounge has been established with the assistance of National Book Trust (NBT), an Indian publishing house and autonomous body under the ministry of education of the Union government.
