On July 25, 2024, we join the global community in observing World Drowning Prevention Day, a crucial initiative dedicated to raising awareness and accelerating action on global drowning prevention. This observance gains additional significance in light of the World Health Assembly Resolution WHA76.18, passed in 2023, which underscores the urgent need for coordinated multi-sectoral action to combat drowning—a leading cause of injury-related death and disability worldwide.

This powerful theme serves as a reminder of the universal vulnerability to drowning and the imperative to prevent such tragedies.

Curator and author Rahaab Allana has been awarded the insignia of Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. The prestigious honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to art, culture, and literature, or who have influenced the global arts landscape. The ceremony took place at the Embassy of France in New Delhi.

The International Olympic Committee named the French Alps as the host for the 2030 Winter Games on July 24, though the decision is subject to certain conditions. In the ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup League 2, Scotland fast bowler Charlie Cassell scripted history on his debut breaking an all-time ODI record by taking 7 wickets for 21 against Oman, in Dundee. Cassell broke the 2016 record of 6 for 16 of South African paceman Kagiso Rabada on his debut against Bangladesh. Apart from Rabada, West Indies pacer Fidel Edwards also had taken 6 for 22 on his ODI debut.

On July 24, 2024, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) of India achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to enhance national security. The organization successfully conducted a flight test of the Phase-II Ballistic Missile Defence System, demonstrating India’s growing capabilities in defending against long-range ballistic missile threats. At 1620 hours, a Target Missile was launched from LC-IV Dhamra. This missile was designed to mimic an adversary’s ballistic missile, presenting a realistic threat scenario for the defence system to counter.

Ajinkya Naik, at 37 years old, has been elected as the youngest president in the history of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). In a decisive victory, Naik defeated Sanjay Naik, a candidate supported by Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar, by 107 votes in a one-sided election.

CMA Bibhuti Bhusan Nayak, a Fellow Member of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) and a member of the Bhubaneswar Chapter, has been unanimously elected as the 67th President of ICMAI for the 2024-2025 term. Nayak brings over 30 years of professional experience in finance and cost accountancy to the position. He is Odisha’s third Cost Accountant to hold this esteemed role.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Krishnan Venkat Subramanian as Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Federal Bank, the bank said in an exchange filing on July 22. Subramanian’s three-year term will commence from September 23, 2024, immediately following the conclusion of the current MD & CEO, Shyam Srinivasan’s tenure on September 22, 2024.

Kristen Michal was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Estonia for the Estonian Reform Party (Eesti Reformierakond). The Estonian Parliament voted in favour of Michal, previously the Minister of Climate, to become the country’s new leader after he was nominated for the position by his party to replace outgoing Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.
