Antyodaya Diwas 2025 is observed on 25 September 2025 to mark the 109th birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, a visionary political thinker, philosopher, and proponent of Integral Humanism. The term Antyodaya means the rise of the last person, symbolizing the goal of ensuring that the poorest and most marginalized sections of society are uplifted. Instituted in 2014, Antyodaya Diwas is a reminder that development is meaningful only when it reaches the weakest sections, promoting compassion, social responsibility, and fairness.

In a significant development aimed at ensuring continuity and stability in India’s military leadership, the Central government has extended the tenure of General Anil Chauhan as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The decision, announced on September 24, 2025, allows General Chauhan to continue in the crucial post till May 30, 2026, or until further orders. This extension reaffirms the government’s focus on strengthening jointness, coordination, and modernization across the three armed forces.

Israel successfully tested “Iron Beam,” a high-power laser system developed by Elbit Systems and Rafael, designed to destroy incoming missiles. Iron Beam will complement existing missile defense systems like Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow, and is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Praveen Kumar, a 1993 batch IPS officer (West Bengal cadre), as the new Director General of ITBP, succeeding Rahul Rasgotra, who retires on September 30, 2025. Praveen Kumar, currently Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, will serve as ITBP chief until his superannuation on September 30, 2030, bringing expertise in intelligence, border management, and counter-insurgency.

In a significant diplomatic move, senior Indian Foreign Service officer Gourangalal Das has been appointed as India’s next ambassador to South Korea, a key strategic partner in East Asia. The appointment comes at a crucial time when India is strengthening its ties across the Indo-Pacific, and South Korea holds growing importance in trade, technology, defense, and regional stability. Das is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and leads the sensitive East Asia Division.

India ranks 38th in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025, improving from 39th last year and making a 10-place jump since 2020 (48th); it leads among lower middle-income economies (37) and Central & Southern Asia (10 economies). Strong policy support, rising R&D investment, and a vibrant startup ecosystem have boosted India’s status as a global innovation hub, as captured by the GII’s 80 indicators of innovation inputs and outputs.
