Income Tax Day, celebrated annually on July 24, commemorates the historic introduction of income tax in India in 1860 by Sir James Wilson. Over the decades, this day has evolved from being a marker of tax imposition to a celebration of India’s fiscal growth, voluntary compliance, and digital transformation. Income tax, once seen as merely a revenue collection tool, now symbolizes economic self-reliance, transparency, and nation-building.

The “Meri Panchayat” mobile application received the WSIS Prizes 2025 Champion Award under the category of Cultural Diversity and Identity, Linguistic Diversity, and Local Content at the WSIS+20 High-Level Event held in Geneva, Switzerland. Developed by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and NIC, the app empowers over 25 lakh elected representatives and nearly 950 million rural citizens across 2.65 lakh Gram Panchayats, promoting digital inclusion and transparent rural governance.

India has recorded its highest-ever leap in the Henley Passport Index 2025, moving up eight spots from 85th to 77th position. With visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 59 countries, the Indian passport has gained in global strength, surpassing regional peers like Pakistan and Bangladesh. This reflects the country’s improving diplomatic engagement and global connectivity.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai has once again made India proud by ranking among the world’s top 10 international airports in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2025. With a score of 84.23, it is the only Indian airport on the prestigious list for the third consecutive year. This recognition highlights India’s growing prominence in global aviation infrastructure, passenger satisfaction, and technological upgrades.

China has initiated the construction of the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Tibet Autonomous Region, raising environmental and geopolitical concerns, particularly in India and Bangladesh, which lie downstream. The dam, known as the Motuo Hydropower Station, is located in the Yarlung Tsangpo canyon, considered the world’s deepest and longest land canyon. Chinese Premier Li Qiang recently presided over the project’s launch. 

Jharkhand has become the first Indian state to launch mining tourism, an initiative announced by CM Hemant Soren and inspired by his visit to the Gava Museum of Mines in Barcelona, aiming to showcase the state’s rich industrial and mineral heritage. Home to nearly 40% of India’s mineral wealth, Jharkhand has partnered with Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) through an MoU to open mining sites to tourists, students, and the general public for educational and experiential visits.

India’s creative sector received a major boost with the inauguration of the first campus of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Mumbai. This initiative aims to elevate India’s presence in the global AVGC-XR (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comic & Extended Reality) ecosystem by nurturing industry-ready talent through world-class training and collaborations. The launch aligns with the government’s broader vision to enhance India’s digital and creative economy while integrating emerging technologies into skill development.
