Recognizing the international concern surrounding sand and dust storms, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 12 July as the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms. Some of the most intimidating sights in nature are rolling dark clouds of sand and dust that engulf everything in their path. This phenomenon, known as sand and dust storms (SDS), turns day into night and wreaks havoc everywhere from Northern China to sub-Saharan Africa. These storms have become a serious global concern in recent decades due to their significant impacts on the environment, health, agriculture, livelihoods, and socio-economic well-being.

UU Lalit to head the Committee on Appointment of VC in Bengal

The Supreme Court has appointed the former Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit as the chairman of the search and selection committee for the appointment of vice-chancellor in all the state-run universities of West Bengal. A division bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice K V Viswanathan passed this order on 9 July 2024. The two-judge bench passed the order on a special leave petition filed by the West Bengal government under Article 138 of the constitution.

Its first phase focuses on safety audits of 500km of state highways and major district roads.
